Biomass Boilers & Stoves

Biomass Boilers & Stoves

Why use Biomass Heating?

Biomass is a word derived from biological and mass. In the context of renewable energy it generally means wood in the form of pellets, chips, logs or waste wood, but can be anything from  'energy crops' such as Miscanthus to agricultural waste such as straw, corn stover or poultry litter.

The Benefits

As gas and oil prices rocket and look set to increase further over the coming months producing energy from biomass has both environmental and huge economic advantages. It is a carbon neutral process. The CO2 released when energy is generated from biomass is balanced by that absorbed during the fuel’s production. Furthermore, biomass can contribute to waste management by harnessing energy from products that are often disposed of in landfill sites.

It is most cost effective when a local fuel source is used, which results in local investment and employment and also minimises transport miles.

Biomass for Fuel

There are four basic sources of biomass:

  • Virgin wood, from forestry, arboricultural activities or wood processing
  • Energy crops, high yielding crops grown mainly on agricultural land including miscanthus and willow
  • Agricultural residues, such as rape and cereal straw
  • Industrial and domestic waste, particularly recycled wood but includes recycled vegetable oil for bio diesel

As fossil fuel prices continue to rise, your Biomass Heating System will save you more and more.
